City of Portland - Maine State Pier Fender System and High Capacity Bollards

TEC designed a new fender system and high capacity mooring bollards for the City of Portland. This project was designed in two phases, to be completed during the cruise ship off-seasons. The fender system replaced a lighter-duty fender system, utilizing steel pipe piles backed by energy absorbing rubber extrusions. Existing floating camels were re-used to make contact with vessels using the berth. High capacity bollards were installed integral to the pier on driven pipe pile foundations. As cruise ships have gotten larger, line loads from their winches have exceeded the safe working loads of other existing bollards at the pier. This project will allow the existing facility to safely handle larger vessels.
